There is an epidemic sweeping the nation, probably, and I just don’t know what to do about it. I recently went to a high school football game because my job requires me to. I assure you it was not by choice. It’s not that I don’t care about kids or that I have something against high school sports. Quite the contrary, I miss high school football and if I could, I would go back and be a sub-par linebacker and slightly better left guard over and over again until I got CTE and joined a circus. No, I don’t hate high school sports but i believe that high school kids do.
The opposing team had 14 players on the field, only two less than the crowd on their side of the stands. During the game 2 players were injured and the coaches agreed to shorten the second half to 1 minute quarters. That is kids not caring, and that will end coaches careers. In addition to small numbers there wasn’t but ONE fat guy on the team. I was 250+ LBS my senior year of football season and I was the smallest guy on the offensive line! That’s another problem, kids are getting smaller, they ain’t eating and they sure ain’t listening to CT, it’s no longer their MF set and they will not be performing another. The stats for that team by the way: 0-9 this season and 0-39 the past four years. I kid you not. This is a problem, a HUGE problem.
The growth of social media is to blame, is what most people say. I agree for the most part, i mean i am currently typing this on my laptop while; listening to Beethoven on Spotify (humble brag), watching a Youtube video of epic knockouts volume 2 on mute, trolling a buddy of mine by posting an unflattering picture of him that I screenshotted from Snapchat, on his recently-engaged-ex-girlfriends assortment of ill-angled engagement photos on her FB, and downloading podcasts to listen to at work tomorrow. Social media is the devil, and these kids are satanists tryna get noticed by Senpai.
Before MySpace and Friendster, kids used to care. Now all kids want to do is double-tap and swipe-up. Not only is this a problem in high school sports but just high school in general. Forget getting in shape and learning the importance of teamwork and dedication, these kids are ignoring the teachers who devoted their life at least 4 years to educating and preparing these kids for the real world. The teachers have no control either, their hands are tied by the cold handcuffs of this snowflakey PC world we live in. Tweeting in class? You betcha! I would bet that if a teacher even suggests that a student pause his/her tweeting about whatever stupid thing that happened on “Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta 2”, to pay attention and learn about the birth control methods that he/she will inevitably ignore, that student would sue the school for a violation of their freedom of speech to express their concern for cloey chloee kloughy Khloé Kardashians pregnancy via Facebook live… and probably win… and then go on to use the “pain and suffering” money to fund a start-up that makes them even more wealthy with added fame but the fame is too much for their little snowflakey heart so they experiment with LSD and hot yoga accidentally having a child with a SoulCycle instructor, go into a deep depression and end up on celebrity rehab where they have an epiphany that if they would of just listened to the teacher and put their phone down they would not have to make guest appearances at 2 star night clubs for money to pay the ridiculous bill that their accident child runs up on his/her iPhone 19 by going over on megadata watching archived 4D clips of 16 & Pregnant thinking “man birth control is something we learned in kindergarten”. I apologize for the rant in the form of a run-on sentence. The point is that kids don’t care about sports anymore. Right.
Listen kids, sports in high school can teach you so much if you just try. They should be treated like jobs in my opinion. Show up on time in the right uniform with the right equipment and go to work. It Doesn’t matter if its throwing smoke on the mound or running around chasing a deflated volleyball with a broom between your legs. Get out there and be a part of a team! Not only could you potentially discover a hidden talent and become the next LaMelo Ball, at the very least you will get:
- REAL social interaction
- GRIT
- Physical fitness and strength
- An understanding of the importance of morale
- Popularity, probably.
All of which will help you in the future to secure a decent career and not end up like Adeliza in the story above. I know you are saying to yourself, “Well this dude admitted to using social media above, what a hypocrite”. Jokes on you, I already have a job, Diploma, Some College, and as I mentioned above, I WAS A SUB-PAR LINEBACKER IN HIGH SCHOOL. So have yourself a wonderful trip to the pit of misery. DILLY DILLY!
